4 out of 5 stars A great "green" alternative to disposable diapers   May 20, 2010

First off let me say that I am an experienced mom of eight...plus I run a daycare. I have used every kind of disposable diaper. My youngest child, now 14 months is the first to try a "green" diaper. We have been using gdiapers since she was a few months old. There are many positives here. You will rarely see a diaper rash on a kid using these diapers. A a matter of fact, not only was her skin healthier, but we do not have to change the diaper as often as we did with disposables. These diapers biodegrade in a few months and are harmlesss to the environment. You can trash them, compost them, or flush them- take your pick. They velcro in the back, making it a little harder for curious toddler hands to remove their own diaper. And they look stinkin' cute on little tushies!

Are they more work? Of course. But as we do frequent loads with a baby/toddler in the house, it isn't a big deal. If she just wets, we wipe the liner out and reuse. If you are laundering the full diaper everytime, you aren't using the gdiaper correctly. The liner WILL get poop on it- just rinse and wash on the occasions this happens. The outer cloth diaper often will stay clean, especially with babies. Once you have an active toddler, there seems to be more "rolling" of the insert. I bet this wouldn't be a problem with the washable inserts, but thus far we have only tried the regular disposable inserts. As far as leaking entirely past the diaper onto clothes, this has only happened a couple times in the 8 months we have used gdiapers- MUCH better than disposables!

I love not adding further to our overfull landfills. Amazon has a subscription option which lowers the price of the gdiaper inserts to about name brand diaper price (i use a case every 3 1/2 to 4 weeks at about $40 with free shipping). I was paying at least that much or more for Huggies.I love the healthy rash free skin, and barely notice the extra work involved with this diapering system. I reccommend them to friends and family all the time. If we decide to have baby number 9, that will be a gbaby too!

UPDATE June 2010. Still using Gdiapers. However, the velcro is wearing out. Plus as with any velcro, they stick to and sometines ruin other clothes (we never buy velcro bibs for that very reason). So I bought some pocket diapers to test them out. We ended up really liking the FLIP shell. Turns out, the GDiaper biodegradeable liner works BETTER with the FLIP shell than with the GDiaper! As our GDiaper shells wear out we are replacing them all with FLIP...but we continue to use the GDiaper disposable inserts. They are great for baby's bottom and work so well with the Flip...no rash, no leaks. The FLIP is also easier to clean and (so far) is totally non-staining.

2 out of 5 stars Wanted to love them but...   April 25, 2010

I have been using 7th generation until now and was really pleased with them. However, I always wanted a more eco-conscious option and really wanted to try the gDiapers all along. Reading all the good reviews, I ordered 2 sets of refills and the gPants. Here were the issues I noticed after just a few days of use:
1. Diapers are easy to use, so are the inserts.
2. The liner is nylon, and when the inserts fill up with urine, it leaks into the nylon insert, which in-turn wets the outer gPant. Happened each day that we used the diapers.
3. When the child poops, the poop was all over the liner, and sometimes the gPants. I don't care about that much, because I was washing the gPants as needed, but definitely an inconvenience.
4. These diapers did not work for overnight use for us. The urine leaked to the point that our child's pajamas, shirt and under-shirt were wet! YIKES. Basically, the inserts do not hold much urine, especially for a very active water loving kid.
5. The biggest issue was that the buttons that hold the nylon insert were digging into the child's insides. My babe is not a big or super tall kid; is average and still the the buttons gave him blisters by the 3rd-4th day of use. I was HORRIFIED! Am in the process of returning the diaper and the inserts, and hoping it all works out. And yes, I do know how to change diapers, have been doing it for over 2 years now ;)

The concept is great, and I am sure it works really well for some people. It just didn't work for us. I actually was so pumped up about the move to eco-friendly diapers, but alas! We are back to 7th gen for now.
